Abstract The United States invests significantly in animal disease surveillance to safeguard livestock production and trade. This article highlights disease response policies, trade implications, and lessons learned from outbreaks, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
