Fleming Fund AMR Workshop, Rome

As the Fleming Fund project, phase II, comes to an end the University of Liverpool team met in Rome to brainstorm on subsequent phases for AMR work building upon the concept note already developed for the next phase and to identify areas to expand and key stakeholders to involve in future phases of work.

The opening morning allowed us to look into AMR within GBADs and wider topics such as the methodology used in the programme. We then introduced the AMR Workshop to the participants and the background of the Fleming Fund project. After the introduction, we were joined by Till Bachman (University of Edinburgh) who presented the AMR work within Edinburgh and the planned future work. This gave a good insight on how potential collaborations could begin. The afternoon session was focused on stakeholders’ needs between livestock and pets. After splitting up into groups, the teams reassembled to share their findings and their responses to identifying the correct stakeholders and their needs.

The second and final day of the Workshop opened with a recap on day one before moving into data focus. Kurtis Sobkowich (University of Guelph) presented on background knowledge and data innovation. This allowed discussions on the challenges in AMR and what we need to do differently in the future and what innovations may be available to support this. This then moved nicely into the next session on analysis where Kurtis then presented his AMR work in Canada in pets. The morning ended with Joao Sucena Afonso presented on the scope of future analysis with a group discussion on timelining and identifying who to involve. The afternoon session, chaired by Sara Babo Martins, was a funding brainstorm for future funding and finding alignments of interests with funders. This included a session online by Jaap Wagenaar (Utrecht University) on funding opportunities which gave the participants a different angle on what to look for and where.

Overall, a successful two-day workshop with plenty of next steps and future planning. If you would like to hear more about our Fleming Fund work, feel free to click here or contact us!
