Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of global livestock production, tracing its development over the past century and examining current trends and future prospects. It outlines key shifts in species composition, management systems, and production intensity, and explores the roles of producers, consumers, and market intermediaries in shaping the sector. A classification of production systems is presented, highlighting how environmental and management factors influence outputs across regions. The chapter reviews recent data on livestock populations, biomass, and economic value, and discusses major challenges including rising input costs, disease pressures, and sustainability concerns. It concludes by examining two future scenarios: business as usual, and positive change for the sector.
