Seminar: GBADs and DECIDE #10- “The burden of disease in aquaculture: a global perspective and national insights”

On Thursday, 29th January 2026, GBADs and DECIDE  hosted the tenth and final official seminar in a series between the two projects. The aim of each presentation has been to present research that interests our audience. You can find the recording of the talks below.

The two presenters; Edgar Brun and Cecilie Sviland Walde provided insightful presentations on aquaculture with an engaging discussion at the end with various questions from the audience.

The first presentation was given by Edgar Brun, who is a renowned veterinarian and expert in fish health and welfare at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute. The final presentation was given by Cecilie Sviland Walde, a researcher specialising in the economics of animal health, also at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute. Both presenters are members of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Collaborating Centre for the Economics of Animal Health – European Region.

Presentation one: Edgar Brun provided a global overview of aquaculture as a rapidly expanding livestock sector, now supplying more aquatic food for human consumption than capture fisheries.

Presentation two: Cecilie Sviland Walde presented a national case focused on pancreas disease (PD) in Norwegian salmon farming, using economic theory to frame disease control as a collective action dilemma.

We would like to thank Edgar and Cecilie for presenting to the consortium. With a big thank you to the consortium for their questions and a good discussion. If you would like to hear more about the Seminar Series, please contact gbads@ed.ac.uk
